Version 1.2
Released: August 26, 2026
The headline: backups are now crash consistent. Before each run, the app freezes your files in an APFS snapshot and backs up that frozen moment, so a file you edit mid backup can never end up half old and half new in the backup. This uses a snapshot capability Apple grants to individual apps on request, which Back That Data Up has been granted. When a snapshot is not possible, the app says so plainly in the activity log instead of quietly copying live files.
You can stop a running backup. A Cancel Backup button appears on the job while it runs. Stopping is safe: the partial backup is cleaned up, earlier backups are untouched, and the run is recorded as stopped, not failed.
Security and privacy
- Post quantum protection for Cloud Vault keys (X-Wing: X25519 combined with ML-KEM-768, the NIST standard), so vault uploads stay protected against future quantum attacks.
- Your vault index and activity log are now encrypted at rest, closing a gap where the list of protected file names was readable even though the files themselves were not.
- Restores are verified against the fingerprint recorded at upload. A cloud copy that has been altered is refused rather than restored.
- Stronger passphrase protection (PBKDF2 iterations raised to 3,000,000, minimum length enforced).
Updated the same day (build 6)
- Restore a whole folder from Cloud Vault. Any vaulted folder, or any subfolder inside it, restores in one action with its structure intact. Files land in a fresh folder at a destination you choose, so nothing existing is ever overwritten.
- Browse vaulted folders like Finder. Subfolders first with counts and sizes, drill in, breadcrumbs to climb back out.
- Interrupted vault uploads resume when the app next launches.
- Restoring from a locked vault explains itself up front instead of failing file by file, and vault windows close on their own when the vault locks behind them.
Cloud Vault
- Cloud recovery bundle. A dead Mac plus your recovery key is now enough to rebuild your entire vault, including the master key and file index, from the cloud.
- Deleted cloud files heal themselves. If the app's folder is deleted from your cloud storage, the app notices, re encrypts and re uploads from your local files, and tells you what it did.
- Change your vault passphrase without re encrypting anything.
- Uploads continue while the vault is locked.
- Files the app can no longer read are flagged with a one click fix instead of silently failing to back up.
- A dead cloud sign in now shows as "Re-link" instead of pretending to be connected.
Backup engine
- Crash consistent snapshots, as above. The privileged helper was rebuilt to carry Apple's snapshot entitlement.
- Backups issue far fewer file system calls per file. On large backups to drives that are slow at metadata, this saves real time.
- The app repairs its own backup helper installation at launch, and every backup tells you plainly if it could not take a point in time snapshot of your files first.
Fixes
- Scheduled overnight backups now wake the Mac every night, not just the first night after launching the app.
- Removing a file with "delete cloud copies" while offline now refuses loudly instead of silently orphaning the cloud copies.
- Deleted files no longer reappear after a disaster recovery restore.
- The menu bar dropdown no longer highlights informational rows as if they were clickable.
- Clearer, larger text on the disk helper settings screen.
Requirements
